Telling Your Story Through Song

A song is another way to talk about life. 

Listen to and analyze songs that portray personal anecdotes in creative ways. Be guided through a songwriting process utilizing simple musical devices, lyrics, rhyme schemes, and storytelling.

The workshop is divided into two parts: “song analysis” and “lyric writing”. In the first week, participants will listen to examples of songs across multiple genres (country, pop, folk, blues, etc.) to determine which features makes them memorable. From this knowledge, participants will choose a story or topic to write song lyrics. In the second week, the facilitator guides participants to hone in on their lyrical creation through various exercises. 

The workshop culminates with a composition of original lyrics to be shared with loved ones. 

(Experience playing a musical instrument is NOT a prerequisite.)

Building Trust In A Community Through Songwriting is an experiential workshop that welcomes anyone from all walks of life. Students, teaching artists, donors, administrators, and parents are invited to share about themselves and identify points of contention in their classrooms or communities. It is through the explicit naming of problems that solutions arise collectively. Teaching Artist, Kateri Lirio, MAT facilitates the songwriting process from start to finish. You will feel heard and empowered to take on life's challenges after attending this workshop!
