Kateri’s teaching style…

is compassionate, nurturing, and collaborative. Lessons are thoughtfully crafted and leave room for play. Accommodations are made for in-person instruction and distance learning.

Curriculum is student-led and customized with appropriate pedagogy for their needs. By giving students agency for creativity and a safe space to share through project-based learning, the student will naturally contribute to their family and communities. Lessons integrate the arts with national state standards.

All learning is interconnected in some way.

Kateri’s hope is that the student’s learning experience fosters curiosity, empathy and an ethical concern for society. At the end of each lesson, the student is sent off with a creative mission that helps them understand music, culture, and their expanding world. From the first lesson to their last, the student will discover foundational interpersonal skills, perseverance, and resilience to further lifelong learning wherever they may go.

Kateri’s teaching philosophy…

A student will thrive in learning spaces when they…

  • have voice and choice. Lessons draw from the student’s personal interests. Students choose songs that are interesting to them while Kateri determines culturally sustaining pedagogy that will help them grow.

  • have a parent encouraging them to practice during the week
parents co-learning is also welcomed as long as the student is comfortable

  • have fun while learning musical fundamentals and proper technique to avoid harmful habits down the road

  • are given foundational tools and approaches to further lifelong learning as they mature.
